Georgia State University’s CASA provides centralized pre-med programming that complements advising from the College of Arts and Sciences in order to identify serious and realistic interest in health professions, with focus on programs in medicine, veterinary medicine, dentistry, and pharmacy. Undergraduates need support in recognizing and establishing characteristics that contribute to successful admission to medical school and competitive bids for residency. Three main goals drive this pre-med programming: 1) help students solidify their interests and eligibility for medical school and similar programs; 2) provide pre-med mentoring that keeps students on track toward successful med school progressions; and 3) establish a repository for shadowing, scribe, and related volunteer experiences.
I am a 2018 IMSD alumni! Being apart of this program gave me the foundation I needed to progress in my scientific career. From CV’s to mastering personal statements, they catered workshops that pinpointed my weaknesses to help me become the best candidate for jobs, scholarships, and various higher education courses. The staff not only met with me often about my career goals, but I also kept in touch after graduation and gave a lending hand when needed. There are plenty of opportunities to network with other alumni, students, as well as professors. In addition, they provide information on various scholarships, summer programs, and graduate school options. IMSD is unlike any other program, and I encourage everyone to check them out. It’s a decision that you will not regret! – Nicolette Barnett, IMSD Fellow
