Jericho Brown has been awarded the 2020 Pulitzer prize for his poetry collection titled The Tradition. The title of this work may seem misleading as Brown’s poems challenge traditional views on issues such as sexual identity, the religious experience, and racial injustice. Brown says that he writes “to be as subversive and radical as possible” when exploring the beauty, sadness, and violence that can be contained in a queer black body. The Pulitzer board described his work as, “a collection of masterful lyrics that combine delicacy with historical urgency in their loving evocation of bodies vulnerable to hostility and violence.”
Jericho Brown is a professor of Creative Writing and Director of the Creative Writing Program at Emory University.
